THOMPSON ACADEMY

1970

Dedication

Frank D. Dibble

After three years as Headmaster, Mr. Dibble is leaving Thompson. We
would like to take this opportunity to thank him for all that he has done
for us and the school, and wish him good luck in the future.

In September of 1967, Thompson Academy was in the beginning of a
new age. A young Headmaster had come to take over the school. He did
not come alone. He brought his family, all of whom were to make a large
impression on the school.

Mr. Dibble had many ideas for Thompson. He increased not only the
curriculum, but also the athletic program, adding three new sports to the
program in his first year and a fourth in his second year. Another of Mr.
Dibble's accomplishments is a revitalized and dedicated faculty. These
men have worked hard in all areas of school life to make Thompson a
better school.

Mr. Dibble has not only been a Headmaster and an administrator here,
but also a teacher and a coach. In the 1968-69 school year Mr. Dibble
taught English to the sophomores and coached the varsity basketball
team. To those boys who knew Mr. Dibble as a teacher and coach, he has
come to be a very special man. He will be remembered for some time.

Appreciation

Mrs. Rita Dibble

If any woman was asked to take on the duties of a librarian, to be a
substitute chef in time of emergency, the first-mate on the Pilgrim HI
when non-scheduled trips are made, to be ready to receive and entertain
any and all visitors to our island, and to be nurse and mother to one
hundred and ten boys, with little or no compensation, we would probably
be told that this just could not be done by one person. Yet, not only does
Mrs. Dibble effortlessly and enthusiastically accomplish all of these tasks,
she also cares for the needs of her own three children and Mr. Dibble.

While her work has not gone by unnoticed, nor, most importantly
unappreciated, it often has gone by unhearalded. It is for this reason that
we, the Class of 1970, would like to publicly say to Mrs. Dibble — thank
you. In the three years you have been with us we would like you to know
that your every effort and contribution to us has been warmly received
and greatly appreciated.

In Memoriam

Mr. Frank Cormier

Early this fall Thompson was saddened by the passing of Mr. Frank
Cormier who had done much for the school and students here at
Thompson.

Before coming to Thompson Academy Mr. Cormier lead a somewhat
adventurous life, serving on the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Force.
Another of his accomplishments was a vital part in the development of the
North American Early Warning System.

He came to Thompson in 1957 as Farm Manager and the Master of A
Dorm. In 1963, the Farm and Trade School program ended. He then
became an Administrative Assistant. He was responsible for the general
maintenance of the Island. He was responsible for the remodeling of A, B,
and C Dorms, and many other such projects about the Island. His talent as
a master builder, coupled with his vast knowledge and experience, made
him a valuable and respected man. The loss of his various talents and
efforts will be felt here at Thompson Academy for years to come.

This year Thompson Academy had one of the strongest Varsity Football teams in its
history. We out-scored our opponents by an average of 32 to 6 per game.

One of our biggest assets this year was our new line coach, Mr. Beall. Mr. Rose, our head
coach, gave us the direction and guidance we needed to be a winning team.

Although it was a unified team that won this year we did have some outstanding players.
On offense: Ed Heath with 15 touchdowns; Jerry Stellmach and Dick Cummings had 6
each, Bob Cummings had 4, Mark Osborn had 2, and Sims and Allen had 1 apiece. On
defense Ruben Sims led the way along with Charles Thomas, Ed Heath, and Tom Fiste.

Our record was 6 wins and 2 losses, but this by no means gives a true indication of our
team. We lost 2 games by 2 points each. While we compiled 262 points this season defense
was our strong point— we held our opponents to 48 points.

Our schedule was as follows:

The 1969 Thompson Academy Soccer team showed great improvement over last year's
squad. As a second year team, with a first year record of 1-9, they came back this year with
a 3-4-1 record with five games cancelled.

Bill Gaynor in as goalie, with a year's experience behind him made it even tougher for the
opposing team to score with only 16 goals scored against him. The scoring for Thompson
was led by Stan Clark with 3 goals. Other goals were scored by Norman Coates, Jeff
Hardesty, Jon Healy, John Ridge, Brenton Clark and last but not least Don Krall scoring
accidentally, we hope, for the other team. Lettermen leaving this year are Bill Gaynor, Jeff
Hardesty, Norman Coates, Stan Clark, Louis Muniz, Kevin Griffiths, Lewis Kneeland, John
Ridge, Sam Bass, Sonny Gallagher, and Don Krall. Next year's team can look forward to the
return of Ed Gorham, Brenton Clark, Mark Broadard and other returning lettermen to make
next year's team a winning team.

The J.V. Football Team had a four game schedule for this past season. However, due to
adverse field conditions they were only able to play two games.

The first game was against Tabor Academy. We lost 24-0, but the team showed great
effort and spirit in trying to overcome a seasoned Tabor squad. Our second game, against
Milton Academy, was another disappointment. We lost 24-12. Despite the few scheduled
games this season many of the J.V.'s saw action on the Varsity Team. Below are the names
of the players who participated in all of the Varsity home contests. P. Scott; J. Duggan; G.
Lee; R. Caines; J. Del Valle; C. Smith; A. Longo; R. Hanley; R. McAteer; K. Hurley; and S.
Simonson.

The Thompson Academy Cross Country Team put in a very strong effort this year.
Although there were no wins everyone tried their hardest and did their best. One of the
team members placed first in one meet, but since the sport is won by the number of runners
placing towards the front, that meet was lost by a close score. The team this year was a fresh
one, none of the members had run the sport before. Coach Allan Willis expects to train
these same boys again next season and with this extra year of training, hopes for a good
season next year. We would like to thank Mr. Willis for his help and undying faith in us.

Cummings, L. Flynn, M. Osborn.

This year the Thompson Academy Varsity Basketball Team was characterized by a sharp
eye and a fast hand. They proved this by winning eight out of ten games. The entire season
was overshadowed by our loss to Assumption. It was a bitter battle going into two overtimes
and ending with our losing by a score of 76-74.

This year's Varsity Basketball Team was run by two rookie coaches, Mr. Tura and Mr.
Willis, who proved quite able to do the job as the record clearly shows.

The graduating members of the team this year are: J. Thomas, J. Ridge, P. Coates, S.
Clark, E. Heath, K. Moore, D. Szydlo, and Bob Cummings.

Despite a disappointing season the Thompson Academy Seahawks will be remembered
for their undying determination and fighting spirit.

Our senior players were always fighting and always displaying spirit and hustle while on
the ice. Rich Daley, the most dependable player on the team, started every game at left
defense. Mark Osborn played most of the season at right defense. Richard Cummings, one of
our steady goal tenders, missed most of the season because of an off-the-ice injury. Our first
line center was Alan Cohen who fought for the scoring honors with Mark Osborn.

The underclassmen, whom we depended on greatly, gave sparkling performances for the
entire season. Paul Ross and Eddie Rogers were the wings on the first line. The second line
was centered by Bill Paulsen and Charlie Hunt. Eddie Gorham and Brian Bogus were the
wings for the second line. Steve Kinsley played several positions on the ice. Brian Zaniboni
played most of the games in the goal but played a couple of games on a line with Mark
Brennan and Steve Kinsley.

Sportsmanship and hard play characterized the Thompson Seahawks. Thompson
Academy is proud of their efforts on the ice.

The Junior Varsity Basketball Team had another fine season ending with eleven wins and
two losses. Before the loss to Tabor Academy, the J.V.'s had a winning streak of 36 wins in
three seasons.

With the rebounding of Co-Captain Mark Ledwell and the playmaking of Co-Captain
Jerry Lynch and Norman Coates along with the scoring punch of Sammy Bass and Charlie
Smith, the J.V.'s won eleven games before losing in a close game with Tabor Academy. John
Del Valle was our capable sixth man. The overall improvement of such players as T.
Abraham, S. Goulding, C. Clark, B. Clark, and T. Longo gave our team the extra help they
could depend on in tight situations. The new players such as John Duggan, Fred Carangelo,
and Kerry Hurley have shown much potential this year.

The best game of the season was against Thayer Academy. A fine first half in which we
out-scored Thayer 34 to 19 combined with the outstanding play of Norman Coates and
Sammy Bass made this one of our best games.

The players of the 1970 Junior Varsity Basketball team would like to thank Coach John
Horan and Assistant Coach Charles Beall for a fine season and their invaluable help.

The Thompson Academy Weight-Lifting Group is a group of interested persons who are
there to build their bodies or in some cases to lift for enjoyment. This group does not enter
into any competition. The group was organized by Mr. Tura, an English teacher, who has
been lifting for five years. He developed the lifting programs for each participant to enable
them to build the kind of body they want. The most improved of the weight lifters are Mr.
Merry, Mr. Karp, and K. Allen, and K. Griffiths.

Merry, P. Scott.

Thompson's Lacrosse team, as in earlier years is looking forward to another exciting
season. Losing one of its fine coaches, Mr. Farr, the responsibilities are put upon last year's
assistant coach, Mr. Merry.

Being a smaller and less experienced team than in previous years, the team must place
more concentration on stick handling, speed, and scooping, to defeat its larger more
experienced rivals. With the fourteen lettermen, there are only seven starters from last year.

Mr. Merry, being an outstanding and dedicated coach, realizes that his team is lacking in
experience and finesse. He gives all his time and effort to whip the team into shape for the
opener against Brookline High.

This year the competition as in past years should be stiff. Thompson has always fought
hard, and a standard of excellence has been set. The excellent coaching, the fighting
Thompson spirit will be the deciding factor in many of our games this year and it will make
this year's Lacrosse team a winning team.

R. Terbush, M. Osborn, J. Stellmach, G. Lynch, B. Suchy, Coach Mr. Willis W. Adams.

This year's Varsity Baseball Team is the product of last year's building. We are looking
forward to a winning 1970 season.

The team includes many of the starters from last year's team. They include: John Ridge,
Bill Paulsen, Jim Thomas— Captain, Walter Berard, Tony Longo, Sam Bass, and Matt O'Neil.
The new players, and they are welcome additions, needed to fill the positions left by last
year's graduating class, are: Bob Cummings, Mark Osborn, Jerry Stellmach, Ken Moore,
Brian Suchy, Tom Fiste, and Terry Terbush.

This combination of experience and talent should make for one of the best teams at T. A.
in recent years. The potential is there and the Coaches, Mr. Beall and Mr. Willis are going to
try to develop it.

The yearbook staff wishes to extend to the team a "good luck" on their season and
hopes that you will support the team throughout the season.

(left to right): L. S. Dee, J. Jones, K. Jones, L. Jones, P. O. Tea, S. T. Pea.

This year's yearbook would like to pay tribute to the athletes and the long-lost sport of
Squamish. This year's revitalization of the sport has brought much enjoyment to the school.

As you may already know, the home games were played inside our field house (New
Dorm). The game's rules, of which there were none, proved to have destroyed much of New
Dorm.

The team roster showed that many of Squamish 's founders returned to play for
Thompson. The two most valuable players were "Dick" Nixon and "Abbie" Hoffman. Both
played in the "best possible fashion" during the 2Va game season. Our last game with the
U.S. Senators was called on account of good weather. Our coach, Mr. "Led" Zepplin,
coached the team while in exile on the Isle of Thompson. Although gagged and in shackles,
he came through with much spirit.

At last, we would like to thank our referees and field judges who helped keep the
corrupted evils out of the game of Squamish. They were: "Honest Denny" McLain; Judge
"Clem the Claw" Haynsworth; Edgar Allen Poe; "Zero Spiro" Agnew; and Dr. Timothy
Leary (better living through chemistry).
